Are You A Windows Or A DOS Mind?

© John Delavera

When Windows (R) didn't exist, 'Disk Operating System' did (DOS.)

DOS is black.
Windows is colorful.

In DOS, you could only run 1 command. Windows introduced the "multi-tasking" environment.

So in DOS, you had to follow a step-by-step plan to reach your goal, which could be running a
new game, opening a new application, etc… There was a cursor, not like the cursor of the
mouse today... It was this: C:_ and the _ symbol was blinking, waiting for your command...
I mean the whole screen was black, some others green, and the only thing you could see
was the underscore _ blinking...

You could type:

C:help

and a list of the commands you could enter was displayed.

You could type:

C:run thisgame.exe

and the application thisgame.exe would run or this message would be displayed:

C:thisgame.exe not found

Just this was displayed...

No matter what you wanted to do, you had to... state your wish to that blinking cursor
and if you typed the correct wish, then the result would come... otherwise, you'd get the
rejection...

If you made a mistake in DOS, nobody would forgive or help you. You're alone, staring
at the black screen with the white cursor blinking after a phrase like, "An error
occurred...," or something similar.

The same applied when programming in DOS.

BASIC was the first language presented by Microsoft(R) for Home Computers...
BASIC uses numbered rows of commands and executes them one by one in a row.
A program in BASIC would look like this - I do not remember the correct commands,
but I'll give you an idea:

10 crls
20 dir
30 print "Hello people"
40 end

When you finished typing the '40 end' command and pressed the ENTER key, the
cursor was waiting for an order...

C:_

That was the time to save the program to one's disk and then run it (by making the
program an executable [.exe] application)... The above "program" would clear the screen
and type "Hello people"… Nothing special. So if you had to add new code, you'd find the
correct raw code and include a new numbered raw code to execute the new command,
like this:

35 print "A silly program"

and so on...

But Windows...

Windows can tell you what the error is - at least which program didn't work properly and
produced the error.

You can also use a DeskTop interface for programming in Windows... with ready to use
buttons and form elements... just drag and drop the button into your drawing area in
Visual Basic (Microsoft created this programming language and still supports it), which in
turn will "translate" the numbered rows of commands into whatever action(s) the
commands are supposed to perform, and the program will perform the action(s).…

In Windows, you can open 10 programs and work with all of them at the same time like
the way a bee flies from flower to flower...

Which operating system does your brain relate to?

DOS?

Do you take "your time" going from one command to the other in what you do with
sophisticated numbered rows of decisions? Do you need a plain environment in which you can
live and work without being distracted by lights, noises, and pop-up windows?

Or Windows?

Can you successfully handle multiple projects, are able to run all of them, and reach an end
without being afraid to fail? Does one project feed your next one? Do you feel happy when you
open 10 windows in your browser and surf from one site to another with the feeling that there
is a whole world on the Net you can explore NOW?

Which operating system does your brain support?

Speaking for me...

I am... Windows... XP:-))

If you're a ...DOS 'mind, have you ever felt the need to "upgrade"?

Happy Marketing!
