The Top of The Web-Iceberg
Written by: John Delavera
What you
SEE in a website is just the top of the
'web-iceberg' - and I am going to prove it to you.
You see the webpage.
You don't see:
a) The registration
of the domain name.
b) The hiring of a hosting service.
c) The configuration of the server to host your pages.
d) The creation of the email addresses to use with the website.
e) The creation of all the graphics in a unique style that
will differentiate your website.
f) The creation and layout of the navigation inside your website.
g) The configuration of all your html pages so you'll not
have to change 100s of them for a small correction (that
deals with SSI tags and use of templates.)
h) The creation of your html pages. The editing of the html
code so that it is search-engine-friendly (meta tags is
just the beginning step for such a task.)
i) The creation of the folders and the uploading of all the
pages and images in different modes (ASCII for the HTML
pages and BINARY for your images.)
j) etc. etc. etc.
You see the subscription form.
You don't see:
a) The installation
of the autoresponder or the mailing
list application that will be used to run the newsletter, the
ezine, or whatever.
b) The creation of all the html pages that will be used
throughout the subscription process or the html pages that
will display the error messages during the same process.
c) The creation of the follow-up messages that will be used
to inform the reader and create a powerful mailing list.
d) The creation of the Archive and its templates.
e) The errors that will definitely occur, especially if you
don't use a remote autoresponder, but use a script you
installed on your server.
f) The 'cleaning' of the database. Running a newsletter
with 5,000+ subscribers means invalid email addresses,
expired email addresses, spam complaints from people who
have forgotten that they subscribed themselves to your
newsletter, etc.
g) Any add-ons that will make the newsletter more
attractive and interactive. For example: running polls,
creating a members' area, offering a message board, etc.
You see the Order button.
You don't
see:
a) The installation of the software that will allow you to
secure your Members-Only protected area on your server.
b) The writing of all messages for successful and unsuccessful
membership.
c) The configuration of all autoresponder follow-up
messages for educating your members on how to get the most
from what you offer.
d) The creation of the 'Thank You' pages with all the
download links to the products you sell, as well as the
instructions on how to download the files - if they are
zipped, how to get WinZip; if they are in PDF, how to get
Adobe(R) Acrobat(TM); etc.
e) The configuration of a payment system to get cre.dit card
orders and the creation of all the order links for your
customers.
f) The email queries from customers who failed to reach
your protected area and/or to download your products -
because of THEIR mistake. Yes, there are people that blame
you for not creating an 'easier' system for them to use -
even if you run the easiest system.
g) The updating of the HTML files inside the Members' Area
with new products and with updates of the existing
products.
h) etc. etc. etc.
Having a
great idea means nothing.
Applying the idea in practice is everything.
The creation
of a new website is not an easy task,
especially if you want to make a living from it.
And if you
became confused or even frightened by all the
above details, don't be: I didn't mention anything about
PROMOTION, which is the most difficult part of this
money-hunter online 'game.'
Happy Marketing!
